Language doesn't sit still, it shifts with who's speaking, where they're from, and who they're talking to, and this course is about taking that variation seriously as data rather than noise. You'll read foundational texts (Holmes, Wardhaugh, Mesthrie), examine real spoken and written samples through concepts like register, dialect, and language attitude, and produce two essay-style midterms, a final, homework, and a presentation. For an MA TEFL student, it's the bridge between abstract linguistics and the classroom: once you see how gender, ethnicity, and power shape English (and Turkish), decisions about which variety to teach in EFL or EAP stop feeling neutral.
