CINT 501 Theory of Interpreting

CINT 501 steps back from the booth to ask what interpreting actually *is* as an object of study, how Interpreting Studies took shape as a discipline, and what cognitive science, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis have to say about what happens when a person renders meaning in real time. You'll read foundational work from the Pöchhacker reader and the John Benjamins volumes, give weekly presentations, and produce two midterm reports plus a final report tying research findings to your own practice. It's the theoretical backbone for the rest of the conference interpreting track, giving you the vocabulary and evidence base to reason about why certain techniques and training methods work, not just how to execute them.
