TEFL 531 Research Methods in Linguistics I

TEFL 531 trains you to read applied linguistics research like a researcher rather than a consumer, learning to judge whether a study's design, sampling, and analysis actually support the claims it makes about language learning. You'll work through quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods traditions by critiquing published articles in paired presentations, building a methodology portfolio, and reasoning about validity, instrumentation, and inference across experimental, correlational, and narrative designs. As the first half of the MA-level methods sequence, it gives you the critical toolkit you'll need before designing your own thesis study, where shaky methodology is the difference between a defensible contribution and a rejected one.
