The second half of the linguistics research methods sequence, this course zooms in on qualitative inquiry as a serious methodological tradition rather than a softer alternative to numbers, asking how interpretive frameworks like ethnography, phenomenology, and grounded theory actually generate knowledge about language in use. You'll spend the term reading published applied linguistics studies critically, designing your own data collection protocols (interviews, think-alouds, observations, diaries, visual media) and practicing first- and second-cycle coding on real data, with a learning portfolio and oral presentation as the main deliverables. Coming after Research Methods I, it equips you with the design vocabulary and analytic discipline needed to propose and defend a thesis project that's qualitatively or mixed-methods grounded.
