LNG 331 Readings in German I

Pitched at A1 on the CEFR but tailored for Archaeology and History graduate students, this is essentially a beginner German course where the real goal is getting you to a point where you can decode source texts in your field rather than hold a conversation. You will work through four units of grammar (pronouns, articles, cases, tenses, passive voice) while practicing skimming, scanning, and grammar-centric reading on biographies, city guides, and short articles about reliefs, ceramics, and architecture, with assessment built around a midterm, final, three projects, and an article presentation. It is a service course for humanities researchers who eventually need to read German scholarship in the original, so the payoff is access to the substantial Archäologie and Geschichte literature that never gets translated.
