LNG 322 builds A1-level French specifically as a research tool for archaeology and history students, so the real goal isn't conversational fluency but being able to sit with a French source on an ancient site and actually parse it. Each week pairs a grammar point (tenses, relative pronouns, the subjunctive, passive voice) with readings on Anatolian and Greek sites, Sardes, Magnesia, Tralles, Nyssa, Smyrna, plus mythological texts, which you translate, mine for vocabulary, and present in class, with a midterm, final, and homework rounding out the grade. It's a continuation of Readings in French I and matters mostly because a lot of the foundational scholarship on these sites was written in French and never fully translated.
