GE 510 Fundamentals of Social Research Design

Graduate-level methods course where the real lesson is epistemological, what counts as valid knowledge in the social sciences and how your choice of design (positivist vs. interpretivist, quantitative vs. ethnographic, comparative vs. historical) commits you to certain claims and forecloses others. You'll work through King/Verba alongside Kuhn, Lakatos, and Geertz, write reaction papers and assignments on conceptualization, sampling, and measurement, and build toward an independent research project with a final essay. It's the foundation you need before any serious thesis or PhD application, most students take it precisely when their own research question is starting to take shape.
