Instrumentation is where you learn to think in terms of who plays what, translating musical ideas into idiomatic, playable parts for every section of the orchestra by understanding each instrument's range, timbre, mechanics, and notation conventions. You work through eight weekly scoring assignments that escalate from single-instrument writing toward full ensemble textures, culminating in a project that handles a choir, large wind ensemble, or orchestra, with Adler and Piston as your reference shelf alongside score study from the Classical and early Romantic literature. It's the practical bridge between knowing harmony and counterpoint on paper and actually producing scores that a conductor can rehearse, foundational for anything you'd later do in composition, arranging, or conducting coursework.

Course Learning Outcomes: Course Learning Outcome Assessment ● Demonstrate theoretical, technical and practical knowledge, instrumentational and notational skills pertaining to the woodwind and brass instruments in following areas: structure and acoustical preconditions, historical evolution, members of corresponding instrumental family and their peculiarities, conventional and extended playing techniques, sound production and parts of instruments operative therein, properties of sounding, tessitura etc Assignments Final Project In-class participation ● Devise original submissions on a weekly basis that demonstrate thorough knowledge of key ideas, instrumentation-practical and textural skills, ability to think up and formulate appropriate parts for individual instruments and their groupings, and engagement with material and visions presented in projects.
