Music notation is the interface between a composer's idea and a performer's realization, and this course treats it as a craft you actively practice rather than a set of rules to memorize, covering everything from conventional meter and tuplets to graphic, hybrid, and electroacoustic scoring. You'll produce weekly homework in a notation software like Dorico (working through Gould's Behind Bars), wrestle with parametric decoupling and prescriptive-vs-descriptive choices, and build toward a project where part preparation and idiomatic writing for real instruments actually matter. Expect this to be the foundation for any later composition, orchestration, or score-prep work you do, since unreadable notation kills even good music in rehearsal.
