AMER 427 Topics in Theory for American Culture

Critical and cultural theory as a toolkit for unpacking how American culture produces meaning, knowledge, and power, from the shift between oral and written cultures to Foucault, Gramsci, and contemporary debates on race, gender, and hegemony. You'll work through demanding primary texts (Barthes, Benjamin, Lyotard, Bakhtin, Eagleton) and translate that reading into an essay, homework set, and presentation that force you to actually apply the concepts rather than just summarize them. As a senior requirement in AMCL, it consolidates the historical and literary groundwork from earlier years into a theoretical vocabulary you'll lean on for the graduation essay and any future humanities work.
