AMER 426 American Studies in a Global Context

AMER 426 reframes "America" as something produced by global forces rather than just exported from them, you trace how colonialism, the slave trade, and the nation-state built the US, then follow neoliberalism and cultural flows back out into West Africa, South Asia, and Turkey. Expect dense theoretical reading (Giddens, Harvey, Heilbroner, Fluck), weekly student presentations on set questions, written homeworks, and a final, with participation weighing in throughout. As a senior capstone in AMER, it pulls together the cultural-studies and historical threads from earlier years and pushes you to argue about US power in concrete economic and political terms, not just textual ones.
