While you write
Check while you write
Does your thesis answer the question, or announce the topic? "In this paper I will examine this" is not a thesis.
Is the thesis split into three reasons? Write it as a) b) c) and the outline falls out by itself, with each item becoming a body paragraph.
Keep the thesis in one place in the document. In the file we measured the thesis was written in two places, one word broke in the second copy, and that broken version got copied into the introduction four days later.
Are the first and last sentences of the paragraph yours or the source's? If they are the source's, the paragraph reads like a summary of that writer.
Do not end the counterargument paragraph without delivering your own verdict, or the reader will think the other side is right.
Do not name the same source over and over. In the file we measured one author's name appeared four times in four sentences, and in the second draft it was turned into a pronoun.
Sources and citations
Do not produce a citation from memory or by having a tool generate it. Copy it from the first page of the PDF you have.
Do not type the DOI by hand, copy it from the source. In the file we measured, one DOI was entered with one wrong letter and one extra space.
The published version and the preprint in the author's own archive can carry different titles. Write the title as it is in the journal.
Ctrl+F every phrase you put in quotation marks in the source text. Anything you cannot find comes out of the quotation marks.
Every source in the text should be in the works cited, and every source in the works cited should be in the text.
Before you submit
Read the word count off Word's own counter, without the works cited. Under the limit means a zero on the Task Requirements item.
Submit the final draft together with the earlier drafts and the feedback written on them. If one link of the chain is missing, the paper is not read at all.
Read the works cited with your eyes once more after converting to PDF; a page number can slip into a line.
Count the file name as part of the text. In the file we measured, two spelling errors in the file name carried into the draft's title and into the submitted PDF.
Copy with a prompt
The prompt you pick goes to your clipboard with your text under it. You paste it into your own account.
