ME 523 is about bridging scales: how the discrete behavior of atoms gives rise to the continuum stress and strain fields you already know from solid mechanics, and how to actually compute that crossover numerically. You'll spend the semester implementing molecular statics and finite element routines, working through three problem sets that build up to a project where you apply these tools to something concrete like surface energy, crystal defects, or plasticity. It's a graduate-level companion to classical continuum mechanics, useful if your research touches materials modeling, fracture, or anywhere the atomistic picture matters but you still need to talk to engineers in continuum language.

Course Learning Outcomes: Course Learning Outcome Assessment To compute stress and strain fields using finite element method for a given geometry and boundary conditions. (homework including report) To understand the role of calculation parameters e.g. interatomic potential coefficients and cutoff radius on the overall material response. (homework including report) To compute stress and strain fields using molecular simulations and compare with the results obtained from finite element method. (homework including report) Not only to understand the basics of molecular simulation of materials, but also to apply molecular simulations to interesting phenomena such as surface energy, defects in crystals and plasticity. Further extensions of the course material to other relevant topics of students’ choices are encouraged and can be realized within the context of the final course Project. (individual or groups of two)
