MBG 416 Science and Ethics

MBG 416 sits at the end of the MBG curriculum because it asks the question the rest of the degree quietly assumes away: just because we *can* do something in a lab, should we? You'll work through case-based discussions and write argumentative essays on the hard problems your research toolkit actually creates, informed consent, genetic enhancement, abortion and euthanasia, organ allocation, animal and human experimentation, authorship and data integrity. Assessment is built around two written midterms, quizzes, and a presentation, so coming in with a real opinion you can defend matters more than memorizing definitions. The point isn't to hand you a rulebook but to make sure you graduate knowing how to recognize an ethical question before you've already answered it with a pipette.
