Coding theory is about the engineering side of Shannon's promise: how do you actually build encoders and decoders that push a real channel close to its capacity limit, trading algebraic structure and computational effort against bit-error rate. You'll move from the finite-field machinery behind BCH and Reed-Solomon through the trellis-based world of convolutional and Viterbi decoding, and finally into the iterative message-passing regime of turbo, LDPC, and polar codes, with homeworks and projects where you implement these decoders and benchmark them by simulation. It assumes you're comfortable with probability and linear algebra and ideally information theory, and it's the natural companion to a wireless or communications track where these codes show up in every modern standard from LTE to 5G NR.
