Graduate labor economics that pairs the canonical theory of how people decide to work and how firms decide to hire with the applied microeconometric toolkit used to actually identify those effects in data. You will work through models of supply, demand, human capital, and discrimination alongside policy questions like the EITC, minimum wage, and returns to schooling, and the assessment reflects that dual focus: quizzes and an open-book midterm on the theory, plus a paper replication, a research essay, and a presentation where you read frontier work the way a researcher does. It sits at the point in the PhD sequence where micro theory and metrics stop being separate courses and start being one way of thinking, and it is the natural launchpad for a labor-flavored dissertation.
