CS 390 is your first real taste of doing research rather than just consuming it: you pair up with a faculty member, pick a problem in their area, and spend the semester actually working on it instead of following a syllabus. The semester runs as a long arc, a couple of weeks of literature survey, then sustained research activity punctuated by an interim report, a final report, and a presentation of what you found. It's the standard on-ramp before things like a senior thesis or graduate work, and it's where you learn that "formulating the problem" is usually harder than solving it.
