Literature here is treated as a political act, not just aesthetic output: the course asks how novels, poems, and movements from realism through postmodernism have diagnosed their societies, imagined alternatives, and quietly (or loudly) taken sides. You'll work through paradigms like modernism, surrealism, existentialism, and the colonial/postcolonial response as competing modes of social critique, with a midterm and a final essay where you develop your own reading of one of them. It's a graduate-level seminar, so expect to bring political theory into conversation with literary texts rather than study either in isolation.
