NSC 519 Comparative Cognitive Neuroscience

Cognition isn't owned by big brains, insects, birds, and primates have all evolved their own neural solutions to the same problems of perceiving, remembering, deciding, and navigating a social world, and this graduate course asks what those parallel solutions reveal about the structural and functional ingredients of a mind. You'll work mostly from primary research articles rather than a single textbook, comparing circuits like the insect mushroom body, avian nidopallium caudolaterale, and primate prefrontal cortex function by function. It's a natural follow-on to a standard systems/cognitive neuroscience background, and the comparative lens is what makes it useful for anyone heading into circuit-level or evolutionary research.
