MSC 171 Theory I: Fundamentals

MSC 171 is the foundation of Western tonal thinking: you learn to hear, read, and reason about how pitches, rhythms, and chords organize themselves into the harmonic language that underlies most music from Bach through the nineteenth century. The work is hands-on, figured-bass realization, four-voice part-writing for triads in root position and inversion, Roman-numeral analysis, and weekly ear-training, all checked against two midterms and a final. Everything you build here (voice-leading instincts, cadential vocabulary, sense of harmonic function) is the literal prerequisite for the rest of the theory sequence and feeds directly into your analysis, composition, and performance courses down the line.
