IR 4121 Intervention in International Relations

When does the international community have the right, or the duty, to intervene in another state's affairs, and what happens when it actually tries? You'll work through the just-war tradition, the post-Cold War shift from sovereignty to Responsibility to Protect, and the liberal peace-building paradigm, then test these frameworks against cases ranging from Rwanda and Bosnia to Syria and Libya through readings, discussion, and a substantial project. Sitting in the upper-level IR sequence, it pulls together security studies, international law, and normative theory into one of the field's hardest practical debates, useful preparation for anyone heading toward human rights, conflict resolution, or foreign-policy work.
