HART 564 Latin II

Latin II picks up where the first semester left off, pushing past survival-level paradigms into the machinery that actually makes Latin prose tick: the full passive system, participles, the ablative absolute, indirect statement, and the subjunctive with its purpose and result clauses. You will work systematically through the back half of Wheelock, drilling forms in the accompanying workbook, translating progressively denser sentences, and sitting two quizzes plus a midterm and final that test both grammar and reading. By the end you should be able to parse a real classical sentence on your own, which is the actual prerequisite for any later seminar that touches Roman inscriptions, historiography, or primary archaeological texts.
