HART 543 Hittite II

The second semester of Hittite picks up where Hittite I left off, pushing past basic noun and verb paradigms into the messier territory that actually shows up in real cuneiform tablets, ablauting verb classes, heteroclitic stems, relative and indefinite pronouns, the supine, the ergative, and the modal particle -man. Weekly work is a steady grind of paradigm memorization, grammar drills, and translating beginner-level excerpts using van den Hout alongside the Rüster-Neu sign list, punctuated by quizzes, a midterm, and a final. By the end you should be able to sit down with a Hittite text, a dictionary, and a sign list and produce a working transliteration and translation, the baseline skill for any further work in Anatolian philology or Hittitology.
