ELIT 393 Essentials of Short Fiction

Short fiction is treated here as a distinct literary form with its own history, tracing how the genre evolved from parables and tales into the modern story through writers like Poe, Chekhov, Joyce, Borges, Munro, and Lahiri. You'll do close reading across roughly a dozen weeks of stories, apply literary theory to them, and produce a mix of analytical work (short essay, midterm essay, paper proposal, take-home final) alongside creative responses like alternative endings or your own stories. As a 300-level ELIT elective it assumes you're already comfortable with literary analysis, and it pairs well with the novel and poetry courses by giving you a compact form where structure, voice, and theme are visible at a glance.
