ELIT 273 takes you from Beowulf through Marvell to ask what we actually mean when we call something "medieval" or "Renaissance", the labels themselves are part of the argument, not just the backdrop. You read a tight set of primary texts (Chaucer, Gawain, Sidney, Donne, Herbert) closely, and the work shows up in a paper proposal at midterm and a term paper as the final, with shorter quizzes along the way. As a sophomore requirement, it gives you the historical spine and close-reading vocabulary you'll lean on in every later period course, from Shakespeare to the eighteenth century.
